The Role of Metacognition in Interactive Learning Environments

This paper presents the core ideas of my doctoral research project. The purposes of my research are (1) to investigate better means to make students learn important metacognitive skills (such as planning and self−monitoring) during problem solving activities when using a computer based learning environments; (2) to design and develop a learning system that can act as a assistant that helps students to reflect on their metacognitive strategies during those problem solving activities. The hypothesis is that generating metacognitive awareness through reflection improves students’ use of metacognitive skills during problem−solving.
